Irish Queen. Peggy McKenna, who was chosen as queen Saturday of the first St. Patrick's Day parade ever held in Rocky Point, gets ready to take a ride in an 85 year old carriage belonging to Francis Brett, Port Jefferson Station taxi driver, who holds the reins.
Rocky Point - This village took on the air of "Shamrocky Point" here Saturday in a manner that would make an Orange man green with envy. In the name of the patron Irish saint, nearly 1,000 persons turned out for a three-mile parade followed by a community sing of melodies from the Ould Sod.
With John Sullivan and George Faulkner, who directed the celebration, as Grand Marshals astride horses, the parade fratured Peggy McKenna, the "Queen of St.Patrick's Day." Another highlight was an 85-year-old carriage driven by it's owner Francis Breet, Port Jefferson Station taxi operator. At the square off Broaday, Rocky Point, where the parade terminated, the marchers assembled for a song by Maureen Faulkner, a community and a speaking program that included talks by Justice of the Peace Kenson D. Merrill and Rev. Vincent Margiotta, pastor of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. William McCarrick was master of ceremonies. To make sure that nothing went wrong with the color scheme, the parade was preceded by Ptl. George McMullen, Brookhaven Town Police, who saw to it that the traffic lights along the route stayed green.
